Season Highlights

Regular Season

  • The 1984-1985 Wyandotte Bulldogs finished the regular season with an 18-2 record.
     

  • In early December, Wyandotte won the KCK League Tournament with an 82-63 victory over the Raytown South Cardinals.

    • Wyandotte had advanced to the finals by defeating the F. L. Schlagle Stallions 82-63 before a crowd of over 3,000 at Kansas City Community College.  William Davis led the Bulldogs with 33 points & 16 rebounds.
       

  • The Bulldogs scored over 100 points in two consecutive games in January immediately after the Christmas break. On January 4, Wyandotte defeated the Sumner Academy Sabres 103-59.  The Bulldogs followed with a 106-49 win over the Harmon Hawks to improve their season record to 9-0.
     

  • Wyandotte started the regular season with 12 consecutive wins to add to the 12-game winning streak they ended the 1983-1984 season with before suffering two consecutive late January losses.

    • In front of a standing room only crowd of 2,000 at the Wyandotte gym, the Bulldogs fell to the F. L. Schlagle Stallions 70-64 ending their 24-game winning streak. William Davis led with 25 points despite playing with foul trouble. 

    • Playing without William Davis, the Bulldogs fell to the homestanding Ward Cyclones 58-49.
       

  • The Bulldogs finished the regular season with a six-game winning streak including a 60-52 win over the then top-ranked F. L. Schlagle Stallions on February 19 at the Schlagle gym.

 

Substate Tournament @ Shawnee Mission North High School

  • The SM North substate featured the two top-ranked teams in the state in #1 Wyandotte & #2 Schlagle.
     

  • In the semifinals the Bulldogs defeated the Shawnee Mission North Indians (now Bison) 68-41 behind 19 points from William Davis and 16 points & 10 assists from Donald Moore.

    • The win advanced the Bulldogs to face Schlagle in the substate championship game.  The championship game matchup was the 4th between the two teams of the season.
       

  • In the finals before a crowd of 2,500, Wyandotte ousted the F. L. Schlagle Stallions 61-55. 

    • Schlagle trailed 44-41 at the end of the 3rd quarter and closed within 50-49 with 6:41 left but never got closer.

    • Schlagle finished the season with a 19-3 record with all three losses to Wyandotte.

    • William Davis led with 14 points, Donald Moore added 12 and Mike Brown finished with 10.

 

State Tournament @ Allen Field House at the University of Kansas in Lawrence

  • In the quarterfinals, playing at Allen Field House for the 2nd consecutive year, Wyandotte defeated the Junction City Blue Jays 77-57. Wyandotte led 20-9 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Bulldogs extended a 39-24 halftime lead to a 62-40 margin at the end of 3 quarters. 

    • Willie Vaughn led with 16 points and Sam Roark & Mike Brown added 13 each.
       

  • In the semifinals, defeated the Blue Valley Tigers 83-60. After only leading 10-8 at the end of the 1st quarter, Wyandotte blitzed Blue Valley in the 2nd quarter to lead 35-22 at halftime. 

    • Willie Vaughn led with 21 points, Mike Brown tallied 15, William Davis added 11 points and 12 rebounds, Sam Roark chipped in 11 & Donald Moore finished with 9.
       

  • In a rematch of the 1984 state championship game before a crowd of 5,100, Wyandotte defeated the Lawrence Lions 66-55.

    • Lawrence trailed 57-51 with 3:25 left before the Bulldogs closed the game with a 11-4 run.

    • William Davis led the Bulldogs with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Mike Brown scored 14, Willie Vaughn added 12 and Kevin Harris contributed 10. Sam Roark contributed 12 rebounds.
       

  • The state championship win was the Bulldogs’ second consecutive & 19th all-time.

Special Recognition
Mario Credit

Mario Credit (Junior, Class of 1986)

Early Life

  • Grew up at 8th & Minnesota Avenue. Attended Welborn & Fairfax Elementary Schools and Tonganoxie Middle School. Transferred to Wyandotte from Tonganoxie High School as a junior in January of 1985.

High School

  • Served as a reserve center for the 1985 State Champion Bulldogs.

  • Picked the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, led by Coach Nolan Richardson, in November of 1985 over interest from Kansas State, DePaul, Arizona, and Oklahoma.

  • Helped the Bulldogs to a 16-5 record his 1985-1986 senior season.

College Career

  • In the 1989-1990 season as the Razorbacks’ starting center, helped Arkansas to the Southwest Conference regular season & tournament titles and a 30-5 record.  Earning the #4 seed in the Midwest Regional, Arkansas defeated the #13 Princeton Tigers, #12 Dayton Flyers, #8 North Carolina Tar Heels, and #10 Texas Longhorns to advance to the 1990 Final 4 that was held at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado. Arkansas lost to Christian Laettner & the Duke Blue Devils 97-83 in the national semifinals.
     

  • In the 1988-1989 season as the Razorbacks’ starting center, helped Arkansas to the Southwest Conference regular season & tournament titles and a 25-7 record.  Earning the #5 seed in the Midwest Regional, Arkansas defeated the #12 Loyola Marymount Lions before falling 93-84 to the #4 Louisville Cardinals before a crowd of 37,400 in the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana.

  • In the 1987-1988 season as the Razorbacks’ starting center, helped Arkansas to a 21-5 record and 2nd place in the Southwest Conference.  Arkansas earned a #11 seed in the Southeast Regional where they lost in the 1st round to #6 Villanova Wildcats by a score of 82-74 at the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, Ohio.
     

  • In the 1986-1987 season as a part-time starting center, helped Arkansas to a 19-14 record.

Sam Roark

Sam Roark (Junior, Class of 1986)

 

Early Life

  • Grew up at 19th and Garfield Avenue.  Attended Chelsea Elementary School and Northwest Junior High before entering Wyandotte in the fall of 1983.
     

High School Career

  • 1985-1986 senior season

    • Earned 2nd Team All-Metro by the Kansas City Star averaging 20 points and 12 rebounds per game.

    • Earned 1st Team both 6A All-State & All-KCK League.
       

  • 1984-1985 junior season

    • Earned 1st Team All-KCK League honors as a starting forward for the State Championship Bulldogs.

    • Earned 1985 Honorable Mention All-Metro honors as a defensive lineman for the football Bulldogs.

    • Also competed as a pitcher for the Bulldog baseball team.

    • Signed to a letter of intent by Coach Gary Garner of the Drake Bulldogs of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) in August 1986.

College career

  • Averaged 13 points & 8 rebounds per game in his 4-year career for the Drake Bulldogs from 1986-1990.

  • In the 1989-1990 season earned 2nd team All-MVC while leading the league in field goal percentage at 56%.

  • In the 1988-1989 season earned 2nd team All-MVC honors.

  • In the 1987-1988 season earned 1st team All-MVC honors & finished as the MVC’s leading rebounder.

  • In 2006, during Drake’s celebration of 100 years of college basketball, was honored as a member of Drake University’s All-Century Basketball team.

  • Drake School Records

    • 4th in Career Rebounds with 792

    • 4th in rebounds in a game with 22 vs. Southern Illinois on January 30, 1988.

    • First player in program history to record a “triple-double”. 

      • Tallied 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists against the Iowa State Cyclones in a 117-114 loss on December 12, 1989.
