Season Highlights
Regular Season

Finished the regular season with a record of 17-1. The average margin of victory was 15 points per game.

There were only 3 games decided by less than 10 points.

Defeated Shawnee Mission East Lancers 55-52. Wyandotte overcame a 6-point 3rd quarter Lancer lead.

Defeated the Shawnee Mission North Indians (now Bison) 53-47.

Defeated the East Kansas League leaders Argentine Mustangs 65-56.

A regular season highlight was the Salina Invitation Tournament despite the fact the Bulldogs suffered their only loss of the season in the championship game.

The Bulldogs defeated the Parsons Vikings 57-55 in double overtime in the semifinals to hand Parsons their first loss of the season. Parsons went on to the state championship game where they again fell to Wyandotte.

Wayne Loving scored the game-winner in the 2nd overtime in the “sudden death format”.

Loving led the Bulldogs with 14 points, Ron Shanks tallied 12, and Dan Swazick added 10.

Fell to the Wichita North Redskins 37-36 in the finals, ending their 18-game winning streak.

Ron Shanks led the Bulldogs with 24 points.

The 61-40 victory over the Ward Cyclones in the regular season home finale extended the Bulldogs homecourt winning streak to 75 games.
Regional Tournament @ Shawnee Mission East

In the semifinals, Wyandotte defeated the Rosedale Wildcats 56-39.

Ron Shanks led with 26 points. Steve Renko & Wayne Loving added 10 points each.

In the finals, playing in front of a crowd of 3,400, the Bulldogs defeated the homestanding Shawnee Mission East Lancers 65-56 to win the Regional for the 9th consecutive year.

The game was tied at 44 with 3:31 left in the 3rd quarter before the Bulldogs rallied to put away the Lancers.

Ron Shanks led with 18 points, Dan Swazick with 13, Steve Renko had 11, & Wayne Loving pitched in 10.

State Tournament @ The Roundhouse at the University of Wichita (now Wichita State)

In the quarterfinals, defeated the Sumner Spartans 61-45.

Ron Shanks led with 16 points. Dan Swazick added 15 points and Wayne Loving added 11.

In the semifinals, defeated the previously unbeaten McPherson Bullpups 72-54.

McPherson led 18-15 after the 1st quarter before being ambushed by a 2nd quarter Wyandotte rally.

The win advanced the Bulldogs to the finals to face the Parsons Vikings in a rematch of the semifinals of the Salina Invitation Tournament that was held in January.

Wayne Loving led the Bulldogs with 19 points that were all recorded in the 1st half. Dan Swazick added 15, Steve Renko with 11 and Ken Bradford with 10.

In the finals, before a crowd of 5,000, Wyandotte defeated the Parsons Vikings 61-56.

Parsons led 49-43 early in the 4th quarter before the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to gain a lead they never relinquished.

Wayne Loving and Dan Swazick led with 17 points each and Ron Shanks added 16.

The state championship victory was Wyandotte’s 15th straight State Tournament game win and 20th out of the last 21.

Wyandotte finished the season with a 22-1 record and a 5th consecutive state title.

At the time, the 5th consecutive state title was a national record.

Steve Renko (Junior, Class of 1962)
Early Life

Grew up at 37th & Freeman Avenue. Attended Roosevelt Elementary School & West Junior High School before entering Wyandotte in the fall of 1959. His father Steve, Sr. graduated from Wyandotte in 1938 and played football for the Kansas Jayhawks in the 1948 Orange Bowl.

As a freshman football player for the Jayhawks was moved late in the season from fullback to quarterback.

Started as the Jayhawk quarterback in 1963 & 1964 where he shared the offensive backfield with future NFL Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers.

Earned Honorable Mention All-Big 8 honors in 1963 helping Kansas to a 5-5 record as a starting quarterback.

Competed as the Jayhawk quarterback in the 1964 season helping Kansas to a 6-4 record.
