Season Highlights
Regular Season

Finished the regular season 18-2.

In the season’s second game, a rematch of the 1968 Class AA State Championship game, the Bulldogs defeated the Topeka Trojans 71-60. In the game played at Topeka High School’s 4,000-seat gym known as “The Dungeon”, Walter Williams led the Bulldogs with 26 points and Ron Russell chipped in 21 points and 14 rebounds.

In a win against the Wichita West Pioneers in the semifinals of the Wichita North Invitational Tournament on January 24, 1969, Wyandotte became the first high school to document & claim their 1,000th all-time victory.

The Bulldogs suffered 2 losses in the regular season.

Lost to the Wichita North Redskins (now Redhawks) 63-62 in the finals of the Wichita North Invitational Tournament in Wichita. The loss ended a 25-game Bulldog winning streak.

Walter Williams led the Bulldogs with 23 points and Glenn Russell added 13.

Lost to the Washington Wildcats 61-60 in the regular season finale.

Won the Sunflower League for the 12th time in the previous 13 years.
Regional Tournament @ Wyandotte High School

In the semifinals, defeated the Washington Wildcats 56-47.

Washington, who defeated Wyandotte the previous Saturday in the regular season finale, led by one point with a minute to go in the third quarter.

Ron Russell led Wyandotte with a season-high 24 points. Walter Williams fought off early foul trouble to finish with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

In the championship game, the Bulldogs beat the Shawnee Mission North Indians (now Bison) 67-37.

Walter Williams led the Bulldogs with 19 points, Glenn Russell chipped in 17, Ron Russell added 12, and Richard Morsden had 8. Dick Shoults led Wyandotte with 8 assists.

Playing in front of a crowd of 3,500 in the quarterfinals, Wyandotte defeated the Wichita East Blue Aces 58-25.

Walter Williams led the Bulldogs with 19 points and Ron Russell added 17.

The Bulldogs held Wichita East to 14 points in the last 3 quarters of the game.

Playing in front of a crowd of 5,500 in the semifinals, Wyandotte defeated the Wichita North Redskins (now Redhawks) 52-49.

Ron Russell led Wyandotte with 17 points, Walter Williams tallied 13, and Glenn Russell added 12.

Wyandotte led by 4 points with 3:50 left but three late baskets by Williams closed the game.

Playing before a crowd of 8,000 in the State Championship game, the Bulldogs defeated the Wichita Southeast Golden Buffaloes 45-43.

Wyandotte trailed by 5 with 5 minutes left but rallied to tie with one minute remaining in the game.

With the game tied, Wichita Southeast stalled until the 0:20 mark until a Glenn Russell steal.

Wyandotte then held the ball for the last shot. With 0:02 left, Glenn Russell hit a 25-foot shot from the right wing to win the title.

Walter Williams led the Bulldogs with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Glenn Russell added 12 points. Dick Shoults contributed 8 points & Ron Russell added 7.

Competing in the 13th state tournament in Coach Walter Shublom’s 14th season, Wyandotte won its 3rd straight state championship and 10th in those 14 seasons.

The 1969 championship game win over Wichita Southeast was the Bulldogs’ 15th consecutive state tournament game win.

The winning streak that started in 1964 state tournament and ended with an overtime loss to the Wichita Southeast Golden Buffaloes in the 1971 state championship game.

Grew up at 29th & State Avenue with his brother & teammate Ron Russell. Attended Roosevelt Elementary School & West Junior High School before entering Wyandotte in the fall of 1967.

Grew up at 13th & Wood Avenue. Attended Bryant Elementary School & Northwest Junior High School before entering Wyandotte in the fall of 1966. Contributed on 3 Bulldog State Championship teams.

Signed a scholarship offer with Hutchinson Community College (coached by Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Coach, Gene Keady) but passed away in an accident in August 1969.
