Maurice Greene

F. L. Schlagle High School, Kansas City, Kansas, Class of 1993
 

Early Life

  • Attended Coronado Middle School before entering Schlagle High School in the fall of 1989.

High School Career

  • Won 7 individual and 1 relay Class 5A State Track & Field Championships while also competing in football for the Stallions.
     

  • In Greene’s senior year at Schlagle, Kris Weems was a sophomore reserve for the 1993 Schlagle 5A State Champions. In addition, Earl Watson was a freshman at Schlagle the fall of 1993.

College Career

  • Attended Kansas City Kansas Community College.  Greene didn’t participate in track & field at KCKCC, but was coached by the Blue Devils’ long-time coach Al Hobson.  Hobson, who had trained Greene since he was 8 years old, was also the coach of the Nike Central track program

Professional Career

  • Won three 100-meter World Championships (1997, 1999, 2001), one 200-meter World Championship (1999) and one 4x100-meter relay World Championship (1999).
     

  • 2000 Olympics at the Sydney Olympic Stadium in Sydney, Australia

    • Won 2 Gold Medals. (100-meter dash & 400-meter relay)
       

  • 2004 Olympics at the Athens Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece

    • Won a Bronze Medal in the 100-meter dash & a Silver Medal in the 400-meter relay.

Kris Weems

F. L. Schlagle High School, Kansas City, Kansas Class of 1995

Early Life

  • Grew up at 33rd @ Webster Avenue.  Weems’ father Charles Weems played for the Sumner Spartan team that fell to Wyandotte 66-55 in the 1956 Regional semifinals. Charles Weems later became a Big 8 Conference college basketball official & officiating supervisor.

High School Career

  • Earned 1st Team All-Metro by the Kansas City Star, 1st Team All-State and Kansas Player of the Year in 1995 when he helped the Schlagle Stallions to the 1995 Class 5A state title. Weems’ fellow honoree on the All-Metro team Tyronn Lue (Raytown High School Class of 1995) won 2 NBA championships as a player (Los Angeles Lakers 2000 & 2001) and as a head coach (Cleveland Cavaliers 2016) where his assistant coach was Larry Drew (Wyandotte Class of 1976).
     

  • On the road to their 1995 state title, helped by Weems’ 16 points, the Stallions won at Wyandotte 65-61. Bulldog Freshmen Nathan Johnson & Victor Williams of the 1998 Bulldog state championship team played that evening’s JV game for the Wyandotte JV against the Schlagle JV.
     

  • Helped the Stallions to the 1993 Class 5A State title (57-46 victory over the McPherson Bullpups).

College Career

  • Earned a scholarship to Stanford University in Palo Alto, California and played college basketball for the Stanford Cardinal of the Pac 12 Conference from 1995-1999.
     

  • Helped the Cardinal to 4 NCAA Tournament appearances including two trips to the Sweet 16 and a berth in the 1998 Final Four. The Final 4 berth was the Cardinals first in 56 years.
     

  • Earned 1st Team All-Pac 12 in 1998. Helped the Cardinal to the Pac 12 Conference Championship in 1999.

Coaching Career

  • After playing professionally in Israel, served in several different coaching roles for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors organization including Head Coach of the G League Santa Cruz Warriors.

Earl Watson

Washington High School, Kansas City, Kansas, Class of 1997

Early Life

  • Grew up at 59th Terrace & Nogard Avenue near Thomson Park.  Attended Coronado Middle School before entering F. L. Schlagle High School in the fall of 1993. 

    • Watson’s father, Earl Watson, Sr., was a significant figure in the development of many standout Bulldog athletes from the 1970’s through the 2020’s, including Calvin Thompson during his long career career managing the Bell Recreation Center, Bethany Recreation Center, and Parkwood Pool while working for the Wyandotte County / KCK Parks & Recreation.

High School Career

  • Played 4 seasons (1994 through 1996-1997) for the Washington Wildcats & Coach Leonard Sparkman.

  • In his senior year of 1996-1997 earned 1st Team All-Metro by the Kansas City Star and 1st team Class 6A All-State after leading the Wildcats with 23 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 assists per game.
     

  • A season highlight was the Wildcats’ 62-56 home win over the Wyandotte Bulldogs that was televised locally by Metro Sports. Watson led the Wildcats in scoring with 25 points. Victor Williams led Wyandotte with 26 points & Nathan Johnson added 15.  The core of Wyandotte’s 1998 championship team (Williams, Johnson, Willie Young, and Cedric Frierson) were all returners from the 1997 Wyandotte team.
     

  • Earned a scholarship with the UCLA Bruins and Coach Steve Lavin of the Pac 12 Conference.

College Career

  • Led the Bruins to 4 NCAA Tournament berths as a 4-year starter at point guard for the Bruins from 1997-2001 including Sweet Sixteen berths in 1998, 2000 and 2001. Earned 1st Team All-Pac 12 in 2001.
     

  • Drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics with the 39th overall pick in the 2nd Round of the 2001 NBA Draft.

Professional Career

  • Played 13 seasons (2001-2014) in the NBA for the Seattle Supersonics, Memphis Grizzlies, Denver Nuggets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Indiana Pacers, Utah Jazz, and Portland Trail Blazers.

Coaching Career

  • Served as Assistant Coach for the Phoenix Suns & Toronto Raptors & Head Coach for the Phoenix Suns.
