Muna Lee

Central High School, Kansas City, Missouri, Class of 2000


High School Career

  • Won 10 individual, 3 relay, and 1 team Missouri Class 4A (largest class) state championships in her track & field career, which is more than any track & field athlete in Missouri history.
     

  • Lettered 4 years for the Central High School Blue Eagles girls’ basketball team.

    • On January 7, 1998, as a Blue Eagle sophomore, Lee led the Central’s girls’ basketball team with 17 points in a 56-30 win over the Paseo Pirates in a game played at the Central gym.

    • The prior day in the same gym, the Central Blue Eagles boys’ team defeated the soon-to-be 1998 Class 5A Champion Wyandotte Bulldogs 54-49 who fell to 5-2 on the season.
       

  • Signed with the Louisiana State University (LSU) Tigers in the fall of 1999.

College Career

  • Finished her career as the most decorated athlete in LSU Track & Field history.
     

  • Earned 7 NCAA Championships, 12 SEC Championships, and 20-time All-American honors.

Olympic Career

  • 2004 Olympics at the Athens Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece

    • Tied for 7th in the 200-meter dash finals.
       

  • 2008 Olympics @ the Beijing National Stadium in Beijing, China

    • Finished 4th in the 200-meter dash finals & 5th in the 100-meter dash semifinals.

Early Life

  • Given name is Janelle Monae Robinson. Grew up near 21st and Quindaro Boulevard.

High School Career

  • Participated in Schlagle Theatre, Drama, Choir, and Math Club. Was a Schlagle freshman the year Wyandotte won the 1998 state championship.

College Career

  • Attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City where she was the only black woman in her class.  After attending the Academy for a year and a half, Monae left the Academy to move to Atlanta and launch her professional career.

Professional career

  • Performs as an award-winning singer, songwriter, rapper, actress, and author.
     

  • As of 2024, has received 10 Grammy nominations as a singer and songwriter. Has released 4 studio albums: The ArchAndroid, The Electric Lady, Dirty Computer, and The Age of Pleasure.

  • Appears in television & feature films as both an actress and in a voice role. Most notable films are Moonlight (which earned the 2016 Academy Award for Best Picture), Hidden Figures (nominated for the 2017 Academy Award for Best Picture), and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
