Calvin Thompson

  • #2 Kansas Jayhawks vs. #15 Oklahoma Sooners in the Big 8 Conference Tournament Semifinal at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri on March 8, 1986. The Jayhawks defeated the 15th ranked Sooners 72-70 to advance to the championship game against the Iowa State Cyclones. Calvin Thompson scored 8 points for the Jayhawks and David Johnson scored 20 points for the Sooners in the loss.

  • #2 Kansas Jayhawks vs. #18 Michigan State Spartans in the 1986 Midwest Regional Semifinal at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri on March 21, 1986.  The announcers for the CBS broadcast were Verne Lundquist and James Brown. This game is notable for the controversy with the Kemper Arena game clock.  With 2:21 left in the game and the Spartans leading by 4 points, the Kemper Arena clock “froze” resulting in 15 seconds of untimed play.  With the help of the extra time, KU rallied to tie the game and send it to overtime.  In overtime, Wyandotte Bulldog Calvin Thompson, a member of the Midwest Regional’s All-Tournament Team, scored 8 of KU’s 16 points to finished with 26 points in the Jayhawks’ 96-85 win that advanced KU to the Midwest Regional Final against the North Carolina State Wolfpack coached by future ESPN analyst Jim Valvano.  Valvano was later known for delivering the “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up” speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards while terminally ill with cancer.

  • #2 Kansas Jayhawks vs. #1 Duke Blue Devils in the 1986 National Semifinal at the Final 4 at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas on March 29, 1986.  Duke defeated KU 71-67 to end the Jayhawks’ season with a 35-4 record.  Duke was led by 1986 National Player of the Year Johnny Dawkins and future ESPN announcer Jay Bilas.  The announcers for the CBS broadcast were Brent Musburger and Billy Packer. Kansas led 59-55 with 8:10 left in the game when forward Archie Marshall scored his 13th point of the game while seriously injuring his knee.  Calvin Thompson tallied 13 points in the game.

 

David Johnson

  • #7 Oklahoma Sooners vs. Dayton Flyers in the 1st Round of the 1984 West Regional at the Jon Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 17, 1984.  #10 Dayton defeated Oklahoma the second-seeded Sooners 89-85 with David Johnson scoring 2 points for the Sooners.  3-time All-American Wayman Tisdale led Oklahoma with 36 points and 11 rebounds. 
     

  • #9 Oklahoma Sooners at Iowa State Cyclones at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa on January 23, 1985.  Oklahoma defeated Iowa State 81-74.  David Johnson had 14 points for the Sooners.  The Cyclones Jeff Hornacek, a future NBA player and coach, scored 11 points.
     

  • #4 Oklahoma Sooners against the Iowa State Cyclones in the 1986 Big 8 Tournament Championship game at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri on March 9, 1985.  Oklahoma defeated the Cyclones (coached by Johnny Orr) 73-71.  Gary Bender and future Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Doug Collins were the CBS announcers.  David Johnson scored 11 points and snagged a team-high 17 rebounds for the Sooners. 
     

  • #4 Oklahoma Sooners against the Illinois State Redbirds in the 2nd Round of the 1985 NCAA Midwest Regional at the Mabee Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 16, 1985.  Tim Brant and Bill Raftery were the CBS announcers.  Oklahoma defeated the Redbirds 75-69 in a game David Johnson played in but didn’t score.  With the win, Oklahoma advanced to the Sweet 16 match against Karl Malone and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
     

  • #4 Oklahoma Sooners against the #5 Memphis State Tigers in the Midwest Regional Final at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas on March 23, 1985.  Frank Glieber and James Brown were the CBS announcers.  Oklahoma fell to the Tigers 63-61, falling one game short of the Final 4, in a game David Johnson started and contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds. 1st team All-American Keith Lee led the Tigers with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

  • #15 Oklahoma Sooners against the #6 Iowa Hawkeyes in the 1987 NCAA Tournament West Regional semifinals at the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington on March 20, 1987.  The cBS announcers were Tim Brant and Bill Raftery.  Iowa defeated Oklahoma 93-91 in overtime on a 3-point shot by Kevin Gamble with :03 remaining.  David Johnson contributed  20 points and 12 rebounds for the Sooners.

  • On his senior night, Wyandotte’s Kelley Newton and the #17 Oklahoma Sooners vs. Victor Williams and the Oklahoma State Cowboys at Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma on March 3, 2001.  Kelley Newton scored 9 points and Victor Williams tallied 3 points in the 68-56 Sooner victory.

  • Mary Tyler Moore Theme Song – Starred as “Lou Grant” in the television series The Mary Tyler Moore Show which ran on CBS until 1977. In the role, Asner won 3 Emmy awards (1971, 1972, & 1975) for “Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Comedy”.

  • Lou Grant Theme Song – After The Mary Tyler Moore Show ended, Asner’s Lou Grant character was spun off into a new series Lou Grant that ran from 1977-1982. In that role, Asner won 2 Emmy awards (1978 & 1980) for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series”.

  • E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Trailer –  Wallace-Stone performed in over 75 feature films including The Stepford Wives, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Halloween, The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, Cujo, and Critters.
