Regular Season

Finished the regular season with a 15-3 record.

In the season’s 3rd game, the Bulldogs lost to the homestanding Shawnee Mission East Lancers 68-54. The Lancers outscored Wyandotte in every quarter. The loss was the Bulldogs’ first Sunflower League loss in 4 seasons. Harry Gibson led scoring with 21 points & Richard Jenkins added 12.

Defeated the Argentine Mustangs 43-41 after trailing by 5 points with 3 minutes remaining. Harry Gibson led with 18 points.

In the Parsons Tournament championship game, Wyandotte defeated the Wichita North Redskins (now Redhawks) 62-49 behind Harry Gibson’s 29 points & 17 rebounds.

Wyandotte fell to the Wichita East Blue Aces 52-39 in a Saturday game at Wichita East. The win raised the Blue Aces record to 11-1. The only Bulldog in double figures was Harry Gibson with 20 points.

In front of a crowd of 4,100 at Wyandotte, the Bulldogs avenged the earlier loss and defeated the Shawnee Mission East Lancers 60-48. The win extended the Bulldogs home court winning streak to 57 games. Harry Gibson led in scoring with 19 points. Richard Jenkins scored 14 & Ron Shanks added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Fell to the homestanding North Kansas City Hornets 57-49 after winning at the Topeka Trojans 55-27 the previous night. Harry Gibson led scoring with 18 points & Richard Jenkins added 14.
Regional Tournament @ Wyandotte

In the semifinals, the Bulldogs defeated the Olathe (now Olathe North) Eagles 54-47.

Harry Gibson led Wyandotte with 17 points and Terry Hammons added 12.

In the finals, Wyandotte defeated the Shawnee Mission East Lancers 58-39 to win the Regional trophy for the 8th consecutive year. The win extended Wyandotte’s home court winning streak to 63 games.

Harry Gibson led with 20 points and Ron Shanks added 15.

State Tournament @ The Roundhouse at the University of Wichita

In the quarterfinals Wyandotte defeated the Liberal Redskins 60-48.

The Bulldogs led only 42-36 at the end of the 3rd quarter before their full-court press stymied Liberal in the 4th quarter.

Harry Gibson led the Bulldogs with 24 points & 15 rebounds & Terry Hammons added 18.

Playing before 6,500 fans in the semifinals, Wyandotte defeated the Wichita North Redskins (now Redhawks) 50-38.

The win advanced the Bulldogs to their 8th consecutive state championship game appearance. Wyandotte led 29-16 at half.

Richard Jenkins was the leading scorer with 16 points & 8 rebounds. Harry Gibson added 11 points & 9 rebounds.

Playing before a crowd of 6,300 In the state championship game, Wyandotte defeated the Wichita East Blue Aces 44-41 to avenge the earlier loss & earn their 4th consecutive state title.

East led 19-11 with 3:53 left in the 2nd quarter before Wyandotte rallied to 21-19 at halftime.

Richard Jenkins led Wyandotte with 21 points. Harry Gibson added 9 points and 10 rebounds.

With the win, Wyandotte became the first school to win 4 consecutive Class AA titles and extended their state tournament game winning streak to 12.

Early Life

Grew up at 20th & Washington Avenue in the Westheight neighborhood. Attended Mark Twain Elementary School & Northwest Junior High School before entering Wyandotte in the fall of 1957.
High School Career

Earned 1st Team Class AA All-Tournament.

Earned 1st Team Kansas City Kansas All-Stars by the Kansas City Star.

Competed as a high jumper for the Bulldog track & field squad.

Earned 1959 Honorable Mention Class AA All-Tournament.

Earned 1959 1st Team All-KCK by the Kansas City Star.

Signed a scholarship agreement with the Kansas Jayhawks and Coach Dick Harp in May 1960.

Averaged 7 points and 6 rebounds per game as a starting forward for the 1961-1962 Jayhawk squad led by Coach Dick Harp that finished with a record of 7-18 and a 7th place finish in the Big 8 Conference.

Averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds per game as a starting forward for the 1962-1963 Jayhawk squad led by Coach Dick Harp that finished with a record of 12-13 and a 6th place finish in the Big 8 Conference.

Averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds per game as a starting forward for the 1963-1964 Jayhawk squad led by Coach Dick Harp that finished with a record of 13-12 and a 3rd place finish in the Big 8 Conference.

Fellow Bulldog Steve Renko was the other starting forward for the Jayhawks.

Earned Honorable Mention All-Big 8 Conference.

Earned the Dr. F. C. Allen Award as the Jayhawk athlete with the top grade point average as an electrical engineering major.

Earned 1st team Big 8 Conference All-Academic in 1964.

Professional Career

Assisted Coach Ted Owens for one season in 1964-1965 before entering private business.

Worked 34 years as an executive with ExxonMobil helping to launch their Global Energy Management System.
