Season Highlights

Regular Season

  • The Wyandotte Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 16-3 record and won the KCK League championship with a 9-1 record.
     

  • The average regular season margin of victory was 16 points per game.
     

  • A key regular season win was a 66-57 victory over the defending 6A state champion Lawrence Lions.

    • Willie Vaughn led the Bulldogs with 20 points and William Davis added 18. Lawrence was led by 27 points from Danny Manning.
       

  • The Bulldogs lost to the Parsons Vikings, led by future Kansas Jayhawk player Mark Pellock, 71-62 at Parsons in a January non-conference game.

    • Parsons advanced to the Class 5A title game before losing to the Bonner Springs Braves 56-55.
       

  • The Bulldog suffered two other losses in the regular season.

    • Lost to the St. Joseph Central Indians 62-55 in a non-conference game in St. Joseph, Missouri when 4 of the top 7 players missed the game.

    • Lost to the Washington Wildcats 65-55 at the Wyandotte gym behind 31 points from Wildcat Milton Garner. Garner played college football for the University of Kansas Jayhawks. Garner also played for the Jayhawk junior varsity basketball team that was coached by future NBA & University of Kentucky Wildcats Head Coach John Calipari.
       

  • After the Washington loss, the Bulldogs won the final 4 games of the regular season including a 49-47 win over the Rockhurst Hawklets. William Davis scored the game-winner with 0:05 left and led the Bulldogs with 22 points.

 

Substate Tournament @ Shawnee Mission West High School

  • In the semifinals, the Bulldogs ousted the Shawnee Mission North Indians (now Bison) 53-39.

    • Wyandotte was led in scoring by Manny Holmes with 16 points. Willie Vaughn added 14 points and William Davis chipped in 8.
       

  • In the championship game, Wyandotte ousted the F. L. Schlagle Stallions 65-54. The game was tied at 42 at the end of the 3rd quarter, but the Bulldogs went on a 13-0 run to start the fourth quarter to claim the victory.

    • Wyandotte was led by Manny Holmes with 15 points. Marzay Tatum scored 13 points, Willie Vaughn added 11 and William Davis tallied 9.

 

State Tournament @ Allen Fieldhouse at the University of Kansas in Lawrence

  • Prior to 1984, the Bulldogs last played at Allen Field House in 1969, when they won their 15th state title.
     

  • In the tournament’s first round, the Wyandotte dispatched the Wichita Southeast Golden Buffaloes 68-36. The Bulldogs extended a 10-point halftime margin to earn a 32-point victory. 

    • The Bulldogs were led in scoring by James Davis with 13 points. Marzay Tatum added 11 points, William Davis chipped in 9 points and Manny Holmes & Willie Vaughn tallied 8 points each.
       

  • In the semifinals, the Bulldogs ousted the Wichita East Blue Aces 72-59.  The Bulldogs converted 32 of 34 free throws in the game including 18-19 in the 4th quarter.

    • Wyandotte was led in scoring by Manny Holmes with 19 points. Willie Vaughn tallied 17 points, Mike Brown notched 16 and William Davis added 12. Clint Normore led the Blue Aces with 21 points.  Normore later played football & basketball for the University of Kansas Jayhawks.

      • In the Jayhawks’ 83-79 1988 National Championship victory over the Oklahoma Sooners, Normore scored 7 points on 3-3 shooting.
         

  • In the state championship game, the Bulldogs overcame 20 points from Danny Manning to edge the Lawrence Lions 50-49 on a baseline jump shot with 0:04 remaining by William Davis.

    • Wyandotte was led in scoring by Willie Vaughn with 14 points. William Davis tallied 13 points, Marzay Tatum added 8, James Davis with 7, and Manny Holmes chipped in 4.
       

  • The win earned the Bulldogs their 18th all-time state title and their first since 1976.

William Davis (Junior, Class of 1985)

Early Life

  • Grew up at 24th & Troup Avenue.  Attended Douglass & M.E. Pearson Elementary Schools and Arrowhead Junior High School before entering Wyandotte in the fall of 1982.
     

High School Career

  • Earned 1st team All-Metro in Kansas City Star, Class 6A All-State, and All-KCK League.
     

  • Earned 1984 Honorable Mention All-Metro by the Kansas City Star and 1st Team All-KCK League.

College Career

  • Hutchinson Community College (1986-1988)

    • Led Hutchinson to a 37-2 record and the 1988 NJCAA Championship.

    • Finished as the 6th all-time scorer in Hutchinson history.

    • Signed with the University of Oklahoma Sooners and Coach Billy Tubbs in May 1988.

  • University of Oklahoma Sooners (1988-1990)

    • 1989-1990 senior season

      • Earned both Honorable Mention All-Big 8 Conference & Honorable Mention All-American honors as a starting forward for the Sooners.
         

      • Earned Big 8 Conference All-Tournament honors by leading the Sooners with 26 points and 13 rebounds in their 92-80 Big 8 Conference Tournament Championship win over the Colorado Buffaloes. 
         

      • The 1989-1990 season was a landmark season for the Big 8 Conference as Missouri, Kansas & Oklahoma were all ranked #1 in the national polls during the regular season.
         

      • Oklahoma first defeated the top-ranked Missouri Tigers, then the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks in consecutive home games at the Lloyd Noble Center in February 1990 while scoring 100 points or over. On February 25, 1990, #10 Oklahoma defeated #1 Missouri 107-90 as Davis scored 20 points and recorded a team-high 15 rebounds. On February 27, 1990, #5 Oklahoma routed #1 Kansas 100-78. Davis scored 22 points and added 6 rebounds earning Big 8 Conference Player of the Week.
         

      • The Sooners, who finished the regular season with a 26-4 record, earned the #1 overall seed in the 1990 NCAA Tournament as the top seed in the Midwest Regional. After defeating the #16 Towson State Tigers, the Sooners fell to the #8 North Carolina Tar Heels (coached by Dean Smith) 79-77 on a last-second shot by Rick Fox at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. Davis led the Sooners with 22 points & 15 rebounds.
         

    • 1988-1989 junior season

      • Served as a part-time starter for the Sooners averaging 9 points and 5 rebounds per game.
         

      • Helped the Sooners to a 30-6 record and a #1 seed in the Southeast Regional.  After defeating the #16 East Tennessee State Buccaneers and #9 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in the first two rounds, the Sooners fell to the #5 Virginia Cavaliers 86-80 in the Sweet Sixteen at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky.

Professional Career

  • Played several years of professional basketball in Europe.

Willie Vaughn

Willie Vaughn IV (Junior, Class of 1985)

Early Life

  • Grew up at 25th & Haskell Avenue.  Attended Chelsea & William Allen White Elementary Schools and Arrowhead Junior High School before entering Wyandotte in the fall of 1982.  Married to the daughter of Don Nelson of the Class of 1965 State Championship team. His father Willie Vaughn III earned 1959 2nd Team All-State honors by the Wichita Beacon as a tackle.
     

High School Career

  • Football

    • Contributed as the starting quarterback for the 1982-1984 seasons.

    • Signed with the Kansas Jayhawks & Coach Mike Gottfried in February 1984 over an offer from Kansas State.
       

  • Basketball

    • Earned 2nd team All-Metro by the Kansas City Star & 1st Team All-KCK League in both 1984 & 1985.
       

  • Track & Field

    • Won the 1985 6A State Championship in the 110-meter-high hurdles (13.9 tied state record) & 300-meter intermediate hurdles (38.10).

College Career

  • Played Wide Receiver for the University of Kansas Jayhawks football program from 1985-1988.

  • Caught 133 passes for 2,266 yards and 17 touchdowns in his four-year career.

  • Ended his Jayhawk career as the program’s all-time leading receiver.

  • Career records: Yards, Receptions, Touchdowns, 100-yard games.

  • Individual Game records: Receptions, Average Yards per Catch, Longest Pass Play from Scrimmage.

  • Earned 1st Team All-Big 8 Conference honors in 1986 and 1988.

  • Earned Honorable Mention All-Big 8 Conference honors in 1987.

  • Earned Honorable Mention All-American in 1986.

  • Played for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.
