Season Highlights
Regular Season

The 1957-58 finished the regular season with a record of 18-1. The season’s only loss occurred in the season opener which ended a 22-game Bulldog winning streak.

Before a crowd of 2,500 in the Armory in the season’s first game, the Bulldogs fell to the Ward Cyclones 52-47. The Cyclones, who fought off several Bulldog rallies, led the entire game after the end of the 1st quarter. Phil Heitmeyer and Jim Lugar led with 17 points each and Nolen Ellison added 11. Ray Sadecki (See Historic Connections) led Ward with 17 points.

In front of 2,500 fans in the Wyandotte gym, the Bulldogs beat the Wichita North Indians 41-33 in the championship game of the Wyandotte Invitational Tournament. Wichita North trailed by only 2 points in the 4th quarter before Wyandotte surged to close the game. Phil Heitmeyer led with 18 points.

The Bulldogs trailed the entire game against the North Kansas City Hornets before prevailing in the 4th quarter 54-53. Richard Jenkins scored the game-winner with 0:42 remaining. Jim Lugar led the Bulldogs with 13 points. Bill Kelso, who pitched 4 seasons in Major League Baseball for the California (now Los Angeles) Angels & Cincinnati Reds, led the Hornets with 19 points.

Before a crowd of 3,500 at Wyandotte in the season finale, Wyandotte edged the Ward Cyclones 51-50. With the score tied at 43, Jim Lugar scored 3 consecutive Wyandotte baskets to give Wyandotte a 4-point lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Nolen Ellison led Wyandotte with 14 points, Jim Lugar added 13 points and Phil Heitmeyer with 12.
Regional Tournament @ Washington High School

In the semifinals, defeated the Washington Wildcats 15-8 in a game Washington scored only 2 2nd half points. Washington’s stalling tactics were countered by Wyandotte switching to a zone defense in the 3rd quarter. Phil Heitmeyer led the Bulldogs with 11 points.

In front of an overflow crowd of over 3,000 fans in the championship game, Wyandotte defeated the Ward Cyclones 59-45 avenging their season-opening loss for the second time.

Ward cut a Bulldog lead to 40-36 early in the 4th quarter, but baskets by Phil Heitmeyer & Jim Lugar extended the lead to 8 which was maintained for the remainder of the game.

Phil Heitmeyer led Wyandotte with 26 points & Jim Lugar added 13 as the only Bulldogs in double figures. The win earned the Bulldogs a 6th consecutive trip to the state tournament.

In the quarterfinals Wyandotte defeated the Dodge City Red Demons 50-26.

Bill Young made a 3-point play at the 2nd quarter buzzer to give the Bulldogs a 21-18 halftime lead. Wyandotte blitzed Dodge City 29-8 in the 2nd half to earn the victory. Phil Heitmeyer led the Bulldogs with 15 points and Nolen Ellison added 14.

Playing before a crowd of 3,000 in the semifinals, Wyandotte defeated the El Dorado Wildcats 46-29.

The Bulldogs held El Dorado to 7 field goals in the game. El Dorado led 7-4 after the 1st quarter but the Bulldogs held the Wildcats to 22 points in the last 3 quarters.

Phil Heitmeyer led with 17 points. Nolen Ellison scored 12 points & Jim Lugar added 10 points & a team-leading 11 rebounds.

Playing before a crowd of 4,500 in the championship game, Wyandotte defeated the Topeka Trojans 48-46 on a 20-foot shot by Phil Heitmeyer with 0:04 left in the game. The game was close throughout as Wyandotte trailed by 1 at half and led by 3 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Jim Lugar led the Bulldogs with 20 points and Phil Heitmeyer added 15 points.

Trojan sophomore Fred Slaughter, (See Historic Connections) fouled out in the 2nd quarter after scoring 3 points. Slaughter joined Jim Lugar as 2nd team All-Tournament.

Future Kansas Jayhawk player Jimmy Dumas scored a late basket to draw the Trojans within 2.

In their 6th consecutive trip to the state championship game, the Bulldogs earned their 2nd consecutive Class AA championship and 3rd title in those 6 years.

College Career

Played for the freshman team for the Kansas State Wildcats in 1958-1959.

Averaged 3 points and 2 rebounds as a sophomore for the 1959-1960 Wildcat team that tied the Kansas Jayhawks for 1st place in the Big 8 Conference.

Before a home crowd of 11,000 in Ahearn Fieldhouse, scored 8 points in the Wildcats 84-82 loss in the post-season Big 8 playoff game against the Kansas Jayhawks that decided the conference’s representative in the 1960 Midwest Regional.

Bulldog teammates Larry Comley & Rex Beach were also members of the 1959-1960 squad.

Averaged 3 points and 2 rebounds as a junior for the 1960-1961 Wildcat team that finished with a 22-5 record, won the Big 8 Conference title, and advanced to the 1961 Midwest Regional.

Scored 3 points in the Wildcats 75-64 win over the Houston Cougars in the first round of the Midwest Regional. Scored 1 point in the Wildcats 69-64 loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Midwest Regional semifinals.

The Wildcats finished with a #4 national ranking in the final 1961 Associated Press poll.

Bulldog teammate Larry Comley was the Wildcat leading scorer and rebounder.

Averaged 3 points and 3 rebounds as a senior for the 1961-1962 Wildcat team that finished with a 22-3 record and earned 2nd place in the Big 8 Conference behind the Colorado Buffaloes.

Early Life

Grew up at 30th & Washington Avenue in the neighborhood near Kensington Gymnasium where he honed his skills as a youth. Entered Wyandotte in the fall of 1955.
High School Career

Started on 2 Wyandotte state championship team in 1957 & 1958.

Earned 1958 1st team Class AA All-Tournament.

Earned 1958 1st team All-Kansas City Kansas in the Kansas City Star.

Earned 1957 2nd team Class AA All-Tournament.

Signed a scholarship agreement with Kansas State Wildcats and Coach Tex Winter in May 1958.
