Season Highlights

Regular Season

  • The Wyandotte Bulldogs finished the regular season 16-2 earning their 8th consecutive Sunflower League title. Wyandotte fell in the season opener, then won 16 straight, then lost the regular season finale. 
     

  • The Bulldogs’ average margin of victory was 10 points per game, but 6 (wins over the Argentine Mustangs, Washington Wildcats, Shawnee Mission North Indians (now Bison), Wichita North Redskins (now Redhawks), Wichita East Blue Aces, Topeka Trojans) of the 18 regular season games were wins by 5 points or less.
     

  • In the season opener, Wyandotte fell to the Lawrence Lions 54-48. In the season’s 2nd game, the Bulldogs’ edged the Washington Wildcats 38-36. Nolen Ellison led the Bulldogs with 14 points in the win over the Wildcats.
     

  • Terry Hammons scored game winning points in 3 regular season games.  Hammons scored the game’s last 6 points in Wyandotte’s 44-39 win over Shawnee Mission North. In the semifinals of the Wichita North Tournament, Hammons’ two free throws broke a tie in the game’s final minute in the 45-42 win over Wichita North. Hammons notched 2 game-winning free throws in the 53-51 win over Topeka.
     

  • In the regular season finale at the National Guard Armory in front of a crowd of 3,000, Wyandotte lost to the Ward Cyclones 60-58.  Ward trailed by as many as 16 points in the 1st quarter but rallied to trail only 54-50 at the end of the 3rd quarter.  Harry Gibson led with 20 points.

 

Regional Tournament @ Wyandotte High School

  • In the semifinals, Wyandotte defeated the Bishop Miege Stags 60-48. Nolen Ellison led in scoring with 18 points, Harry Gibson scored 12, and Terry Hammons added 11.  Wyandotte extended an 8-point halftime lead to a 51-38 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter and was never threatened.
     

  • In the finals before a crowd of 3,200, Wyandotte defeated the Washington Wildcats 46-39.  It was the 3rd win over Washington of the season.  Washington led by a point early in the 3rd quarter before a 3rd quarter Bulldog rally increased the margin. Nolen Ellison led with 21 points as the only player in double figures.  The win earned the Bulldogs their 7th straight trip to the Class AA state tournament. 

 

State Tournament @ The Roundhouse at the University of Wichita (now Wichita State)

  • In the quarterfinals, Wyandotte defeated the St. Joseph Cadets of Hays 70-46.  Nolen Ellison led the with 22 points, Terry Hammons had 16 points, & Harry Gibson added 15 points and 10 rebounds.
     

  • In the semifinals, the Bulldogs defeated the Parsons Vikings 53-40 behind 27 points by Nolen Ellison and 19 from Richard Jenkins. Wyandotte led 22-9 at the end of the 1st quarter and fought off Parsons rallies in the 2nd & 3rd quarters to secure the victory. 
     

  • In the state championship game, Wyandotte defeated the Sumner Spartans 52-50 in overtime to win the state title.  Terry Hammons hit a basket with 0:39 left to tie the game at 50 and send it to overtime, then hit 2 free throws with 0:14 left in overtime to win the state title. Harry Gibson notched 13 first half points to lead Wyandotte to a 24-21 halftime lead.  Sumner led 48-44 with 1:37 remaining before Gibson made a jump shot and then a steal and layup to tie the game at 48. Harry Gibson led the Bulldogs with 22 points and 13 rebounds.  Nolen Ellison added 10 points and 8 rebounds and Terry Hammons finished with 8 points. Richard Jenkins added 11 points & 9 rebounds.  Ernie Moore led Sumner with 24 points despite facing a strong defensive effort by Nolen Ellison. 
     

  • The win clinched the Bulldogs’ 3rd straight state title.

Special Recognition

Nolen Ellison (Senior, Class of 1959)

Early Life

  • Grew up at 4th & Freeman Avenue and 8th & Ohio Avenue.  Attended Douglass Elementary School & Northeast Junior High School before entering Wyandotte in the fall of 1956 in the second integrated class. 

High School Career

  • Competed as the first black basketball player in the Wyandotte Bulldog program contributing on 3 state championship teams (1957, 1958, and 1959).

  • ​Earned 1st Team Class AA All-Tournament in both 1958 & 1959.

  • Earned 1st Team Kansas City, Kansas All-Stars by the Kansas City Star in both 1958 & 1959.

  • Earned 1958 1st Team Kansas City, Kansas All-Stars by the Kansas City Star in football as a back.

  • Competed as a 1st baseman for the Bulldogs’ baseball team.

  • Accepted a scholarship offer from the Kansas Jayhawks and Coach Dick Harp in May 1959.

  • Ellison’s brother Benoyd (Butch) Ellison (a Sumner High School graduate), also played for the Jayhawks in the 1960-1961 season after being named National Junior College All-American in 1958 while playing for Kansas City Kansas Junior College (now the Kansas City Kansas Community College Blue Devils).

College Career

  • Played 3 seasons as a starting guard for the Kansas Jayhawks (1960-1961, 1961-1962, and 1962-1963).
     

  • Was known as an “iron man” for playing nearly every minute of every game in his career for the Jayhawks.
     

  • Served as Jayhawk team captain in his senior season of 1962-1963.
     

  • Earned All-Big 8 Conference honors as the Jayhawks’ second leading scorer in both 1961-1962 and 1962-1963.
     

  • A career highlight was a four-overtime 90-88 victory for Ellison and the Jayhawks over the Kansas State Wildcats in the Big Eight Holiday Tournament championship game at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri on December 29, 1962. Ellison, who led the Jayhawks with 30 points in the game, scored the final Jayhawk points in each of the first three overtimes. Ellison made the final basket in the 1st overtime with 1:51 left to send the game into a 2nd overtime. Ellison made two free throws with 4 seconds left in the 2nd overtime to tie the game and send it to a 3rd overtime. Ellison made two free throws with two seconds left in the 3rd overtime to send it to the 4th overtime. Ellison’s teammate Jay Roberts hit the game winner with two seconds left in the 4th overtime.
     

  • Drafted in the 4th round (29th overall) of the 1963 NBA draft by the Chicago Zephyrs (later relocated to Baltimore and then becoming the current day Washington Wizards).

 

Professional Career

  • After declining an opportunity to play professional basketball, Ellison started his career as a teacher & coach including a stint as the basketball coach for Sumner High School.  Ellison then moved on to a career as a top administrator at several U.S. Community colleges including Seattle Central Community College & Cuyahoga Community College.
     

  • Awarded a Distinguished Service citation by the University of Kansas Alumni Association in 1983.
